Week 3 has been kind of productive and this weeks post even has a couple pictures. I’ve officially made up mind on what kind of floor plan I wanted for the house, where things would be, do I really need much/any extra space, etc etc. Since I don’t know how long I’ll be living in this thing, I decided to go a little small and see what things I do and do not need and what things I miss having in a house. Honestly, most of my inside time is split up between the bedroom when I’m sleeping and in front of my computer when I’m working so I didn’t really make plans for a living room and would like to instead build a deck or something in the yard for entertaining when I have people over.

As mentioned in my post last week, we started bush hogging and got it all done. I didn’t get a before picture but I do have an after. Just imagine a bunch of little trees and bushes and you’ll have an idea of what it looked like. There was also one big tree there but we cut it down. The next plan is to have gravel from the road down the driveway a bit then split off to the area in the picture and have a little gravel pad put down where I’ll put the house and be able to park. The area needs a little more work and cleanup and I plan on getting out there with a pair of loppers and cut down the tiny stuff close to the ground.

So now that I have the space cleared out for where to put the house and after about 5 different designs and trying to figure out how much room I needed, I’m officially done and happy with the options I chose. I decided to go with a 10’x20′ High Barn from a local company and it’ll have a 10’x8′ loft so will have 280 sq ft of space. I’ll be using the lower part for normal living and the loft will be used for any storage. I don’t have a lot of stuff to store so I may just have some unused space. One thing I didn’t want was my bed in a loft so I asked the company to build both lofts together at one end over the bathroom and kitchen and I’ll be building a raised platform on the other end where my bed and work space will be. So I’ll also have some additional storage under the platform as well. As mentioned above, I don’t entertain a lot but it’d be nice to be able to have company and maybe have friends over occasionally for dinner, games, etc. Since I also don’t have a ton of counter space, I decided to go ahead and have room for a table too. So also under the platform on the bed side will be space for a couple benches and a table that will be attached to the platform to be lowered and raised when needed. When it’s up, that will also provide bit of privacy for the bed area so it has studio type feel but also a little privacy when needed.

When I went through and designed and done the layout, I searched for appliances and all that first that I wanted and then modified the dimensions in the program I used to get as close of a visual of how things would look. I wanted a decent sized bathroom so I could have full size washer and dryer. I originally thought of getting normal sized washer/dryer and stacking them but I may go with one of those all-in-one washer/dryer combo and put a sink above it. I only done one door and 4 windows in the house and may put one on the end of the house where the bed is depending on how it look. I would also like to have the bed raised a bit higher than a normal frame so I could have a small dresser kind of thing built under it. The platform is raised up 3′ from the floor and since I’ll be getting the 7’4″ wall upgrade and there is about 3′ of head space from the wall to the center of the ceiling, I’ll have plenty of room to be able to stand up and move around on the platform area. I sent the request details off Thursday and if the sales guy I’ve been working with isn’t too busy then I should have the quote early next week and plan on going in and get it all situated and settled I’m expecting about 3-4 weeks of build time once everything is done and processed so that gives me time to get the gravel and everything else taken care of. I’m thinking from my calculations from the first quote he sent me on a 14×28′ that this one will be able $5000-$6000 dollars including delivery and setup which isn’t too bad.

Well that’s about it. Thanks for reading and following along 🙂

Well week 2 hasn’t been very exciting and not a lot happening. I did begin doing some clearing where I plan to put the house and I think Sunday (15th), we may start doing some bush hogging depending on the weather. I got a few weird looks from people driving by because not many people have ever seen a big bearded guy running a chainsaw with a pair of pink ear protectors, but dang I looked good.  I’m super sore, bending over and running a chainsaw is definitely not something I do very often. Hopefully, if we can get bush hogging out of the way, it’ll be easier to do a little cleanup, take out a few stumps and then order a truckload or two of gravel to put down so the blocks for the house don’t sink in too bad over time.

After a month long break, school started back and I was excited to go but already I’m feeling kind of bleh about it. I have an on-campus class this semester on Mondays and Wednesdays and work is letting me come in ~3 hours early which is great but I’m tired of getting up that early. Plus, the class is math so it’s not even a good class. I will say that things are starting to come back and it’s getting easier. I’ve always sucked at math and while I wouldn’t say it’s fun now, going through problems and the knowledge coming back, getting things right and a couple “Eureka!” moments have been alright. I’m also taking World Lit, American History, and Intro to Corrections which are coming along. I’m currently reading The Epic of Gilgamesh for World Lit which I’m actually enjoying. I used to love to read, anything and everything but over the years just kind of stopped. I had read technical and certification books, news articles here and there but nothing like an actual book or work like this in a loooong time. It’s kind of made me realize how much I enjoyed reading before so may add reading a little sub-goal for school.

Other than that, nothing much has happened in the last week. It’s been filled with work, school, homework, more work, sleep. I need to take a vacation and go camping or something. I did buy a new sleeping bag….so that’s pretty exciting. Now I just need to go use it.

Quote – “Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to? You will never find that life for which you are looking. When the gods created man they allotted to him death, but life they retained in their own keeping. As for you, Gilgamesh, fill your belly with good things; day and night, night and day, dance and be merry, feast and rejoice. Let your clothes be fresh, bathe yourself in water, cherish the little child that holds your hand, and make your wife happy in your embrace; for this too is the lot of man.

While I’m not on a journey to find immortality, I know myself and I’m sure many others need to slow down and be reminded the good things we have in our lives and enjoy them and be more thankful.

Laura, I think you might be the avocado.

Well here we are one week into 2017 and I hope it’s going good for everyone. I can’t really complain and don’t have a ton of updates since you know, it’s only been a week but I figured I’d make a short update with how things are going, some thoughts I’ve had and progress made my 2017 goals/plans.

To begin with, this week I made a little headway over making sure where I could put my tiny house out on my parents land. I talked with the electric company to be sure I wasn’t too close to the right of way and that they could still run electric to me without any problem. I also reached out to the Health Dept. to go over what all needed to happen for me to get a septic permit or exemption. My brother thinks he can put it in without me having to get a permit or anything and since he worked for a guy who used to do them, I kind of believe him. However, I prefer to do things by the book most of the time when waste disposal and general environmental rules come into play so I’ll probably hire someone to do it. I also will be doing some clearing of the land where I’ll be putting it and have a friend who has offered to come out and bush-hog and do a little prep work for me so things are slowly coming together. I had hoped to be in the house around March but not real sure if that will happen right now. I may take some time off once I get things prepped and the house delivered to make it a little livable but we’ll see.

If you read my about me then you’ll have seen me mentioning the whole keto thing. I thought I was in the home stretch and building a good habit and close to kicking any sugar/carb addictions and withdrawals I may have had. Well then one day I grabbed a peanut cluster. Then a peanut cluster turned into a dinner at Chilis filled with poor decisions and then that turned into a week of really poor decisions and falling back into old ways. I didn’t go totally overboard but I definitely jumped off the boat in baby-shark infested waters. Are baby sharks as mean as regular sharks? They look adorable but looks can be deceiving….like them damn peanut clusters. So I’ll be prepping new meals and starting again fresh on the 8th when this is posted. I really enjoy this keto thing, I’ve tried several things before but feel deprived and give up and never get back on but doing this I feel great. I’m sure I’ll still make some errors and fall off and that’s okay, things happen but I started this and started 2017 with wanting to actually do more with whatever time I have and to make sure it’s spent wisely so I’ll get back on each time and keep going. A friend gave me a few ideas to reward myself once I hit a milestone so I’ll probably update my 2017 Goal page with those and maybe add or change a few when I think of something else.

As for my no Facebook thing, it’s been a great success. After day 2, I was no longer swiping through my screens trying to look for my Facebook and Messenger icons and honestly I’ve not really missed it. I’ve not stuck to minimizing my YouTube time because I found a few new bands and have been somewhat obsessed and gone down this rabbit hole of amazing-ness. I aint even mad. I did limit my time on Reddit so I don’t get caught looking at stuff all day. I’ll get on a couple times a day for 5 minutes at a time to read a post or two on things like FinancialIndepedence, PersonalFinance, Frugal, Minimalism, and of course TinyHomes then I’m off. I even removed the app from my phone so I’m not tempted. I even convinced my mom who is kind of addicted to Facebook that I’d buy and pay for someone to install a new door in their house since they’ve been wanting one. If she goes two weeks, we’ll split the cost, if she goes a full month then I’ll cover the entire cost of the door, hardware, and a professional to install it for them. She apparently only uses Facebook to keep up with my niece. I should have bet her to stop using FaceTime AND Facebook. I’d win for sure.

Well that about does it. One last thing, I don’t know if I’ll do this every week but sometimes I come across something that really resonates with me whether it be music or a quote or picture, I just become obsessed with it and it sticks with me for awhile. So this week I have a song and a quote that I hope you’ll enjoy.

Song – Mumford & Sons, Baaba Maal – There Will Be Time
Quote – “Raise your words, not your voice. It’s the rain that makes the flowers grow, not the thunder.”

Feel free to share this, several people signed up to get notifications, more than I was expecting honestly haha. I hope your first week was a success and if you made a resolution then hopefully you’ve not gave up and stopped, it’s only been a week :).
